Ronin Variations Presents: The Venger

This comic involves one short comic story that ranges from 5-8 pages in each issue. The story is then given to three art/story teams who each interpret the story for print. The teams are given some room to make adjustments (working with the author) and of course can choose different artistic styles to tell the story in.

The first issue of Ronin Variations Presents: The Venger will be the first story written for the series authored by Matthew Spatola. The Tale will feature Venger both in his Golden Age and current incarnation.

It is my hope to put together groups of two (Penciller and Inker, Artist and Letterer, Artist and Writer) that will work together to create their Variation of the Venger story—though I am open to someone working by themselves if they desire.

Right now I am talking to a few people about working on the project. We have at least one (possibly two) spots open for Penciller/Artists and we could an extra Inker as well as not all Pencillers ink. If you are interested feel free to PM me or you can post here.

Stay tuned for Updates.

That is a pretty neat idea for a book. I'd be down for something in the title somewhere down the line...

Just don't turn our lovely horse into a giraffe:D

Ha ha...just kidding, everyone! I think this is a really cool idea. I always loved seeing my fav artists do their renditions of other people's characters.

Good luck, and if anyone needs any assitstance, input, etc feel free to pester Matt, lol. My email is jason.ossman@gmail.com if anyone needs anything :)

I think if you guys (Matt & Jason) could post a link to reference matterials that would be awesome. I have one pic of the original Venger, and a few of the new Venger. But I think it would be great if we could maybe get a look at some pages from issue #1, or Jason, if you have a series of images that you use when working on Venger it would be very helpful for the artists doing this Variations project.

William, I'm fascinated by this concept . . . both the Variations book in general and the Venger story in particular. But I'm not sure I understand. (I can be slow sometimes.) The same story is going to three different art teams to interpret, or the same plot is going to three different writer/artist teams to finish? Bear with me . . .

The same story is going to three different art teams to interpret, or the same plot is going to three different writer/artist teams to finish? Bear with me . . .

The Script is written by the original writer of the series (In this case Matthew) and that script is given to the teams. Those teams might be an Editor/Artist or a Penciller/Inker or in some cases maybe simply a single person. The teams then work on their vision for the finish project, interacting with the writer and myself.

The Variation idea is grounded in the idea that making a comic is a collaboration and that with different people involved the telling would be different. One part of creating a Variation would be the style of the art.

There are changes that can be made in the layout. For instance you might use an extra panel on a page, or shape your panels differently. Last is the writing, which could be altered style wise--for instance you might work with the writer to add a 'Noir' voice over to the story (telling the same story, but differently). That is what we are looking to do--starting with the Venger story that Matthew is writing. Three artists/teams all work with his script to create three variations of the story.
